How often should I get an Eye Exam?

US Newborns nowadays are screened at birth for major eye conditions. A real eye exam could be done in infants as early as six months. Children up to the age of 18 should have an eye exam every year or every other year if nothing is wrong. Here at Florida Optical Services, we start seeing patients as young as 10 yrs for eyeglasses and/or contact lenses. We accept referrals from Pediatric Ophthalmologist for younger patients. Some of these referrals are for alternate forms of eye patching when they have strabismus or require specialty contact lenses.

If you are a teenager with vision requirement, then your eye exam should be yearly. Eye exam is yearly but a visit to the optician should be every 6 months for adjustments or even sooner if you outgrew the size of your eyewear. People between the ages of 20 to 39 yrs could go as far as every 5 years if they have no problem. Again, if you have vision correction it should be every year. After 39 it should be every 2 yo 4 yrs if you have no problems or yearly if you wear eyeglasses or contact lenses. After the age of 50, it should be yearly. If you have a medical condition, the eye physician may want to see you more often.
