Semi-Soft Lenses (RGP) Gas Permeable Lenses.
They are sometimes erroneously referred to as hard lenses. These lenses are semi-soft as they flex and allow oxygen exchange between the cornea and lens. Hard lenses were made of hard material that did not allow oxygen exchange. There are many advantages to gas-permeable lenses.
Soft Lenses come in different materials, and their high water content makes them extremely pliable; they require less adaptation time. Soft lenses come in disposable designs and are also available custom-made.
Hard Lenses (PMMA) are no longer fitted. This material did not flex. It was solid and did not allow oxygen to enter through the lens as modern-day RGP materials.
Contact Lens Materials
Semi-Soft Materials (Semi-Rigid Flexible Oxygen Permeable)
RGP is a material that is not hard as it flexes and allows oxygen transmission to your cornea. It is used in regular interpalpebral lenses which are usuall y small in diameter from 6mm to almost 11 mm. These lenses rest directly in top of your cornea and require an adaptation period. The same material is used in Scleral lenses which normally are larger than 15 mm and are made to rest in the sclera never really touching the cornea. RGP material corrects almost the same refractive conditions as soft contacts lenses but it also used in Keratoconus Scleral lenses for irregular astigmatism. RGP lenses are considered better for people with DRY Eye Syndrome.
Keratoconus is a condition that affects one person out of 2000. The protrusion and bulging of the cornea make the tissue thinner and irregular, making the quality of vision with glasses poor. We fit scleral lenses for most Keratoconus because this lens provides good-quality vision. These lenses are as large as most soft lenses but are made of an RGP (semisoft material). The lenses are vaulted, and the inner space left is filled with fluid, never touching your corneas, only a tiny margin area outside the cornea, allowing comfortable wear.
