Retinal Imaging Without Dilation vs Dilated Ophthalmology Exams

In a Routine Eye Exam, the Optometrists look at the images taken with the Retinal Imaging  System, which allows them to see almost 15% more than with a direct ophthalmoscope. There is no discomfort in a nonmydriatic Retinal Imaging Screening. Retinal Imaging is becoming the norm although some Optometrists may choose to dilate the eyes.

In an Ophthalmology Exam (Ophthalmologist or by an Optometrist), the visit is centered on disease management, and your eyes are dilated with drops. These drops enlarge the size of your pupil. Dilation lasts several hours and causes sensibility to light. You will have trouble reading and should be indoors, avoiding bright lights. Wearing dark glasses is recommended until the effects of dilation wears off.
